Obituary
Laura Mae Mahon was born on May 31, 1936, to Jesse and Reaver Bowman. She was one of 13 children. She spent her formative years attending school and looking after her younger siblings.
She learned to sew and soon made a majority of her clothes. Shortly after graduating high school, Laura worked at Klein's Department Store. It was during this time that she met and married Ebert Mahon. This union produced three children.
Upon divorcing, Laura decided to work at the Board of Education. She went to school at night to achieve both her Bachelor of Science and Master's degree in Special Education. During her time with the Board of Education, Laura worked as both a Special Education Coordinator and Special Education Teacher. She was licensed to teach both grade level and special education students from kindergarten to High School.
Laura had a love of reading which she passed on to her children. She taught all her children to read at an early age for each of them. Her reading covered a wide range of topics from history to mystery novels.
On a daily basis, Laura would read the Washington Post and the NY Daily News on her trusty Kindle device with great joy.
Laura's cable viewing consisted of English mysteries such as "Midsomer Murders" and "Miss Marple". Her favorite cable channels were CNN and MSNBC, specifically "Deadline White House w/Nicole Wallace"
Laura found great pleasure in viewing Walking Videos featured on YouTube and her favorite YouTube walkers were ActionKid and Urbanist. She could watch these guys walk and describe the area they were walking in for hours on end.
Laura loved all types of food, but for breakfast she loved having her daily coffee and pomegranate juice along with Belvita Breakfast Biscuits. Her favorite dinner item was baked potatoes. Laura would always say that baked potatoes is the one thing she could eat all the time.
In order for Laura to get her exercise, she spent plenty of time walking everyday when she could to run her errands or just for the enjoyment of being outside using her walker.
Laura also had a love for local travel going to places such as Amazon Books in lower NYC, El Viejo Yayo for great Dominican food, and Whole Foods for their selection of grocery items.
Laura loved shopping at both Macy's and Lord and Taylor's. She made it a point to travel to Lord and Taylor's one last time when she knew that the store was closing permanently.
The crown jewel of places for Laura was Junior's Restaurant located in downtown Brooklyn. Many family gatherings were held at this great place over the years and Laura would always try to treat her kids to the great desserts that could be ordered from there.
Laura was a strong, beautiful, warm and humble woman whose belief in God never wavered. When she was able, Laura was an attendee at Brooklyn Tabernacle Church. She never asked "why me" when confronted with a problem. Rather she dug in until the problem was resolved. Like her father, she never suffered fools lightly but took folks as she found them and accepted them for themselves. Honesty was her trademark.
After a brief stay in Brooklyn Methodist hospital. Laura was called home on July 9, 2021, She is survived by her three children, Ebert Jr., Franz and Lisa, 6 siblings (Theresa, Matthew, Thelma, Jesse Jr., Phyllis and Charlene), her daughter-in-law Vivienne (Ebert Jr's wife), several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and a host of friends.
