Obituary

Alice Ruth Powell, the sixth of ten children was born July 30 th , 1946 to the late Navin and Maggie Powell in Scotland Neck along with her other siblings.

Alice's academic life was based in Scotland Neck, N.C., graduating from Brawley High School in 1964 with honors. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Gilbert Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend JJ Petway. Alice was a member of the choir where she sang solo and would also sing on the local radio station when time permitted.

After time spent in Scotland Neck, N.C. she relocated to Brooklyn, NY, where she resided until her death. Her first-born child, a son, Craig Adkins was born in 1967. Alice was united in Holy Matrimony to her first husband Sylvester Pendarvis and from this union a daughter was born, Zakia Pendarvis. Later in life Alice married her soul/party mate Marcus Pittman who preceded her in death in 2003.

Alice worked several jobs until she landed her dream job working for the NYC Dept. of Human Resource, which she retired from in 2002 in a Managerial Position. She was loved and respected by all and even after her retirement she was still remembered as a "fierce dresser". Alice was also a "Jack of All Trades". She could sing, dance, sew, crochet, cook, and tell a "good" story.

After years of retirement Alice became what we now know as a socialite, managing a variety of bars and social clubs in the Brooklyn N.Y. area. During this time, she developed an extended family that referred to her as "Ma" or "Auntie". Her feisty personality and sassy remarks would later earn her the nickname "Hot Sauce." Alice was always the life of any party, and she had a heart of gold (she would literally give you the shirt off her back). But best believe once you left, she would call everyone and tell them what she just did for you… She couldn't hold a secret to save her life.

Alice was so over the top. She was the only person that we knew with two birthdays and celebrated both every year as a milestone, with a color-schemed party. There was no other way that we could have a homegoing service without giving her a color theme send- off. Alice here is your shades of pink party.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Navin and Maggie Powell, 3 sisters, Bulah Norfleet, Virginia Phillips and Lucy Morris, 2 brothers Samuel Powell, and Willie Powell.

She leaves to cherish her memories a son Craig Adkins, a daughter Zakia Pendarvis, 5 grandchildren Brandon, Jason, Stacia (her one and only granddaughter), Deyshaun, and Jayden. 4 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers Navin Powell (Ernestine) of Goldsboro, NC, Judge Powell of Brooklyn, NY, 2 sisters, Rosie Graves (Johnny) of South Carolina and Carolyn Powell of Brooklyn, NY. 8 nieces, 3 nephews and a host of great nieces and great nephews, cousins and friends.
